Suggested Reading
Here are just a few books that I have read and found helpful in my studies. They range anywhere from light reads with layman’s terms, to scientific studies done by Biologists and Ethologists. They are listed in no specific order. I have taken the time to link the titles to Amazon.com so that you can order your own copy if you wish.
1. “Animals In Translation” – Temple Grandin – 2005
A very powerful book written by an Autistic Scientist. It explores the similarities between the human Autistic mind, and the mind of animals.
2. “How To Speak Dog” – Stanley Coren – 2000
3. “How Dogs Think” – Stanley Coren – 2004
4. “Why Does My Dog Act That Way?” – Stanley Coren – 2006
Obviously, Stanley Coren is my favorite author on the subject. He is a human Psychcologist that has an interest in the study of animal Psychology.
5. “Shadow Mountain” – Renee Askins – 2002
A Biologist’s struggle to get wolves re-introduced to Yellowstone.
6. “The Emotional Lives of Animals” – Marc Bekoff – 2007
7. “Never Cry Wolf” – Farley Mowat – 1963
8. “Breeding A Litter” – Beth J. Finder Harris – 1993
A great hands-on book to have around if you plan to breed.
9. “The Other End of The Leash” – Patricia B. McConnell, PhD. – 2002
10. “For The Love of a Dog” – Patricia B. McConnell, PhD. – 2005
I don’t completely agree with her take on canine Psychology, but there is still a lot of great case studies and information in there.
11. “The Truth About Dogs” – Stephen Budiansky – 2000
A light read on dog history.
12. “Cesar’s Way” – Cesar Millan – 2006
13. “Be The Pack Leader” – Cesar Millan – 2007
Again, I don’t completely agree with some of Cesar’s views. But with owning seven dogs, I cannot deny the usefulness of his techniques in managing my own pack.
14. “Dominion” – Matthew Scully – 2002
A look at our God-given duty to manage or “have dominion” over creation.
